Link building is a vital component of a successful search engine optimization campaign. To understand why, you have to understand how Google evaluates a website. Google evaluates a website based on a complex algorithm. It didn't used to be so complex. It used to evaluate websites based exclusively on keyword density, but that was abused by people who just repeated keywords over and over. Google, at wits end with the spammers, devised a new way to qualify websites before they ranked them highly based on keyword density. It began to factor in the number of links that a website had going into it. Why links? Google assumes that a website will have relatively few links going into it if the general opinion of the site is negative. So, each website that we can secure for your website counts as a sort of vote of confidence in your website. Generally speaking, the more links that you have, the better your website ranks, but that's not 100% true.

Not all links are viewed with equal weight by Google. Some links, like links from spam websites or link farms carry little weight, and if you have too many links from these types of websites, your site may actually be penalized by Google. Contrarily-wise, a link from a website viewed as an authority by Google, one that ranks highly for its own keyword phrases, will carry more weight or "link juice", and will boost your website's rank more than 20 links from websites that are relative unknowns as far as Google is concerned.

Like a snowball rolling down a hill, the longer a website is out there, the more links it will accrue. Link building is simply a technique used to speed up/ augment that process. Link building needs to be done carefully. If you present Google with a website that has 100 new links overnight, it can raise a red flag with Google. You want to build links gradually over time, cultivating links from choice websites. You can use online public relations to build link popularity as well.
